A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF ANAHEIM URGING
CALIFORNIA CITIES TO ADOPT A
DESTRUCTION POLICY REGARDIN~
CONFISCATED WEAPONS
WHEREAS, a growing number of California cities are
selling confiscated legal weapons to raise revenue due to budget
deficits; and
WHEREAS, although California State Law enables cities
to sell confiscated firearms to legal gun dealers, the increasing
number of deaths by gunfire are a critical concern to the
citizenry and public health officials; and
WHEREAS, it is reported that 33,000 Americans a year
die by gunfire, many of which are legally owned and authorized
firearms; and
WHEREAS, many jurisdictions throughout the Sate and
Nation have adopted a policy and practice of destroying
confiscated firearms in the interest of public safety; and
WHEREAS, the revenue generated from the sale of these
confiscated firearms is not worth the risk that these firearms
may fall into the wrong hands and exacerbate the high level of
violence in urban areas.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of
the City of Anaheim that the City of Anaheim is opposed to the
selling of confiscated firearms in an effort to increase revenue
at the expense of public safety, and urges other cities in Orange
County and the State of California to destroy confiscated
firearms and terminate the practice of selling firearms.
THE FOREGOING RESOLUTION is approved and adopted by the
City Council of the City of Anaheim this 2nd day of March ,
1993.
