CALL TO ORDER: The meeting of the Cultural and Heritage Commission was called to order by Chair Larsen at 6:30 p.m. 2. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: Omar Masry and Sami Mashney, representatives from The Network of Arab - American Professionals of Orange County (NAAP -OC) presented their plan to help rejuvenate the portion of Brookhurst Street (between 1 -5 and Katella Avenue) and designate it as "Little Arabia — Anaheim," and answered questions from the Commission. 3. PRESENTATION: Geoff Gread was present representing the Anaheim International Film Festival that will be held October 13 -17 at the Garden Walk and answered questions. They are looking for volunteers to help during the five -day event. 4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Vice -Chair Maya made a motion to approve the minutes for the April 15, 2010 meeting; Commissioner Santoianni made a second and the motion passed with all ayes. 5. D.T.C.C. ART GALLERY SUBCOMMITTEE: Chair Larsen reported that the opening for the most recent exhibit turned out very nice, and the gallery is booked through the end of the year. Commissioner Castillo shared that CIM will soon be providing temporary gallery space. She also asked about the possibility of having the gallery application available for people to complete on their computers and submit electronically. Commissioner Santioanni volunteered to transfer the application to PDF format so it could be filled out online. Cathy informed the Commission that they have an account in the Anaheim Community Foundation with some money available for enhancements to the gallery. Chair Larsen said they would like to have different backings put in the cabinets and they will discuss that further at their next subcommittee meeting. She made some suggestions for ways to improve the next opening in the gallery and read a thank -you note she received from one of the artists. 6. ART FACILITIES SUBCOMMITTEE: Commissioner Deneau reported that the presentation is finished; Commissioner Jabbar will be reviewing it again and they plan to distribute the first draft at the next Commission meeting. 7. INFORMATION ITEMS: A. Commissioner Castillo Commissioner Castillo shared that she had a solo show in Washington, D.C. and also went to New York City while on the East Coast. She also discussed the proposed Art Walk and suggested putting local artwork in the Downtown Anaheim offices on Center Street Promenade. The commissioners discussed the Brewery that is planned for Anaheim Boulevard and the Packing House project. She also announced that her gallery is having an opening coming up Saturday from 7 — 11 p.m. Minutes of the Meeting of June 17, 2010 Page 2 AGENDA ACTION TAKEN B. Commissioner Deneau Commissioner Deneau reported that Anaheim Ballet will be coordinating an International Ballet Festival. There are currently three international ballet competitions annually and this would make four, which makes this event very important. He asked Cathy if she could ask the Anaheim Ballet to come speak to the Commission about the event. C. Commissioner Galanis None. D. Commissioner Jabbar Commissioner Jabbar was absent. E. Chair Larsen Chair Larsen reported that she helped judge the trash art display at the Muzeo that included artwork by local school students, and attended the awards celebration dinner at the Anaheim Hilton. F. Vice -Chair Maya None. G. Commissioner Santoianni Commissioner Santoianni announced that the Philippine- American Association of Anaheim Hills will be holding their Philippine Independence Day celebration at the Canyon Hills Library. He also attended their picnic recently as well as the WAND barbeque. He also announced that the World of Color opened at Disneyland, and indicated that you need to get a ticket to in order to get a seat to view it. Lastly, he announced the restoration of Fritz Lange's "Metropolis" which was found recently in South America. He also reported that the only surviving copies of three American films were recently found, a 1916 film entitled "The Arian," a 1928 film entitled "The Crimson City" and a 1921 film entitled "The Gilded Lily." H. Staff Cathy announced that the Arts Council is having their annual opportunity fundraiser; the commissioners opted not to sell any this year. 8. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, July 15, 2010, at 6:30 p.m. at the Downtown Community Center, 250 E. Center Street, Anaheim. 9. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Larsen adjourned the meeting at 8:59 p.m.
