UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: 3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES TIME Thursday, January 21, 2010 6:30 p.m. ACTION TAKEN The meeting of the Cultural and Heritage Commission was called to order by Chair Larsen at 6:30 p.m. STAFF PRESENT Sjany Larson -Cash, Recreation Services Manager Beth Lapkowski, Senior Secretary None. Commissioner Deneau made a motion to approve the minutes for the November 18, 2009 meeting; Commissioner Santoianni made a second and the motion passed with one abstention. 4. D.T.C.C. ART GALLERY Chair Larsen reported that she emailed the Mayor about the budget for SUBCOMMITTEE: gallery openings and asked for $2,000 for the year; Sjany confirmed that she received direction to put $2,000 in the budget beginning the new fiscal year July 1, 2010. Chair Larsen indicated the money would cover approximately four receptions. Chair Larsen indicated that she contacted the Epicurean School to see if they would be willing to donate food for the opening on February 10 which is entitled "Flora, Fauna, Abstract." She also reported the next subcommittee meeting will be January 29. Commissioner Castillo asked if any thought had been put into the idea of having a full community gallery; Commissioner Deneau said that part of the art facilities subcommittee's goal is to find space for a gallery. 5. ART FACILITIES SUBCOMMITTEE Commissioner Santoianni reported that they have the framework and outline of their presentation prepared, that will include a market analysis. They will present their inventory of current venues in the city as well as venues that have ceased operating. Commissioner Deneau added that they also looked at the Cultural Plan and used its recommendations so the report will be based on that. Commissioner Santoianni said the project was getting so large that they would like to present a power point to City Council and make suggestions to hire a professional to expand it. He also indicated he had some contacts who have offered their services at a large discount to help make it financially feasible. Sjany suggested sending the power point to City Council separately with a staff report, and the Commissioners could address them during the public comments portion of a council meeting. Commissioner Castillo: Commissioner Castillo asked about the Commission's website and whether it had to be linked through the City website; Sjany offered to meet with her to discuss it more in depth, but she indicated that this commission is the only one with a website and would welcome input on ways to improve it. Commissioner Maya asked about Twitter and Facebook, and Sjany said the City doesn't want a lot of individual sites developed, but they will post information and pictures of events to the City's Facebook when requested. Commissioner Maya suggested using a room at the Downtown Community Center as a Community Gallery, but Sjany indicated that the facility is scheduled continually. Commissioner Castillo mentioned that CIM might be willing to have some of their vacant space used for displaying art. Commissioner Maya suggested that Commissioner Castillo would be a good addition to the Art Gallery Subcommittee, and Sjany reminded the Commission that each subcommittee can only have three members so there is not a quorum, and suggested they discuss that further next month when all members of the subcommittee are present. B. Commissioner Deneau: Commissioner Deneau reported that the opera season opens next week in Long Beach with a comedic crescendo about the bureaucracy officers encountered trying to enlist in World War I. C. Commissioner Galanis: Absent. D. Commissioner Jabbar: Commissioner Jabbar left the meeting early. E. Chair Larsen: Chair Larsen reported that she, along with Vice -Chair Maya and Commissioner Santoianni, attended the Anaheim Apps presentation at The White House and a reception at the Muzeo. At the event, she met the new President of the Disney Resort, who suggested that the commission should meet with Carmen Smith, who is in charge of Cultural Diversity for Disneyland. She also noted that the new exhibit at the Muzeo started with the State of the Blues at the Carnegie Library and the Frog exhibit is coming to the Muzeo. She also indicated that the Downtown Anaheim Association has one of the Tree House displays on the Promenade working and the others will be up and running soon. F. Vice -Chair Maya: Vice -Chair Maya reported that the State of the Blues show was coordinated with the NAMM exhibit at the Convention Center, which he was able to attend. G. Commissioner Santoianni: Commissioner Santoianni attended the West Anaheim Tree Lighting sponsored by WAND and reported a good turn -out. H. Staff: Sjany reported that Pamela Galera will come to the next meeting to present the interpretive signage for Founders Park. 7. NEXT MEETING The next meeting will be held on Thursday, February 18, 2010, at 6:30 p.m. at the Downtown Community Center, 250 E. Center Street, Anaheim. 8. ADJOURNMENT Chair Larsen adjourned the meeting at 7:38 p.m.
