Broadway 6:30 p.m. Anaheim, CA 92805 CALL TO ORDER - The agenda having been posted at 11:00 a.m. on May 7, 2013, the regular meeting of the Anaheim Public Library Board of Trustees was called to order by Chair Crawford at 6:30 p.m. PRESENT: Laurie Crawford, Carolyn Bryant, Stan Oftelie, Lana Petrullo ABSENT: Linell Mathisen STAFF: Audrey A. Lujan, City Librarian, Jennifer Foxx, PT Senior Secretary, Joe Purtell, Senior Librarian GUESTS: Bruce Brown, Friends of the Canyon Hills Library, Helen Carter, Friends of the Anaheim Public Library INTRODUCTION OF VISITORS AND COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS: A. FRIENDS OF THE ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT: Helen shared that a small cabinet has been placed under the money box in the Book Nook so that patrons have something to put their items on while searching for their money. Carolyn Bryant will be doing the taxes again this year and to thank her the Friends will be making a donation to the Library in Carolyn' son Jacob's name. The article in the Orange County Register requesting book donations brought in a few donations. A tentative book sale has been set for Saturday, December 7, 2013. B. FRIENDS OF THE CANYON HILLS LIBRARY REPORT: Bruce reported that the book sale raised $1,683; each book was 50 cents. Their next meeting is Thursday, May 16, 2013. C. ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION REPORT: The next Foundation meeting is Thursday, May 16. Revenue from the Annual Mystery Authors Luncheon was $1,500 more than last year. The Foundation thanked Tasneem Watts for attending their last meeting to acknowledge the Foundation members for National Volunteer Week. D. UNSCHEDULED ORAL COMMUNICATION: None. E. WRITTEN COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS: Included in packet. IL APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE APRIL 8, 2013 MEETING: MOTION: That the Library Board approve the minutes of the April 8, 2013 meeting as presented. M/S LB /CB 4Ayes. III. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: None. IV. NEW BUSINESS: A. GIS MAPPING OF PATRON USE: Joe Purtell presented the results of the GIS Mapping project that he, Scott Fretwell, and students from the UCI School of Social Ecology completed. Using general, non - confidential cardholder data (type of card, address and last checkout) the students created an ArcGIS map of Anaheim showing where our users and non -users are located. Scott used the data to create service area maps based on census tracts for each library. This will be important information for potential outreach by the Library. CITY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT: • Valencia High School Technology Students approached the Library for internship opportunities. Joe will be utilizing these students for assistance with the Technology Petting Zoo program the Library will offer. The Technology Petting Zoo allows patrons to test out various electronic devices, such as Wads, Kindle, etc. to see which best meet their needs in an unbiased, library centered setting. In addition, staff members and these students will be on hand to assist the patrons. • Audrey gave the Library Board Members goodie bags and thanked them for their volunteer service to the Library. • The Library submitted eight supplemental budget requests. Of those eight, five will be going before City Council for approval as part of the budget process. • Staff is working with other city departments to purchase new software that links the cash register, credit card machine, and Integrated Library System. • Jane Newell is submitting a fee resolution for facility rental rates at Founders' Park. This will enable Founders' Park to accommodate weddings, reunions, etc. • The State Historical Resources Commission approved the nominations for both the Mother Colony and Woelke - Stoffel Houses. Letters of support for these nominations were sent to the State Commission by the Mayor and City Council, the Orange County Historical Commission, the Historic Preservation Committee and the Anaheim Historical Society. These nominations will be forwarded by the State Historic Preservation Office to the National Register of Historic Places for consideration. • Audrey shared the new Library Division Mission Statement that will be brought to the Library Board for approval at the June meeting. • Audrey shared that the City Council has been promoting Library programs during Council Communications. F. PUBLICITY: Audrey shared an article that highlighted a "Night at the Muzeo" and an article published by Library staff member Regina Powers titled "Ode to the Picture Book." G. LEGISLATIVE UPDATE: The California Library Association (CLA) is working on an effort to connect public libraries to the Corporation for Education Networks Initiatives in California (CENIC) Backbone. CLA and the State Library are participating in a discussion regarding the feasibility of adding public libraries to CENIC's existing high- bandwidth, high- capacity Internet work that currently connects schools, colleges, and universities to a statewide network. VI. ACTIVITY REPORTS A. CENTRAL ADULT & YOUTH SERVICES ACTIVITIES & STATISTICS: Audrey shared a publicity piece that shows important statistics such as the number of patrons that visit the library per day, annually, registered card holders, etc. B. OPERATIONS ACTIVITIES: The Library Card mobile application is ready to be introduced to the public. C. BRANCH SERVICES: Included in packet. VII. MONTHLY RECOGNITION OF SUPPORT /CERTIFICATE BY BOARD MEMBERS: The Board recognized the students from the UCI School of Social Ecology for their work on the GIS Mapping. Anaheim Public Library Board Meeting May 13, 2013 Page 3 VIII. BOARD ITEMS STAN OFTELIE — Requested a meeting with Audrey to learn about the City's budget process. LANA PETRULLO — Made a donation to the Library in honor of the Library Board. Lana presented a card addressed to the Library Board. "Dear fellow Anaheim Library Board members, It is surely with regret that I leave the Library Board. Participating in the Board's important work to support and advocate for the city's library system has been a fulfilling joy. With all of you, I know how vital a resource Anaheim's community library system is to residents throughout the city -not only to provide personal book, publication, Internet, and other knowledge -based services, but also to help encourage and maintain an informed and educated citizenry. I have also enjoyed getting to know and working with each of you; I admire the volunteer service you give to the community. My very best wishes for a continued success with one of the City of Anaheim's true community treasures. Take Care, Lana." CAROLYN BRYANT — Thanked Lana for her service and for attending City events. Carolyn attended Day of the Child program at Haskett Library which included the Raising a Successful Child presentation by Dr. Roberto Baeza and Day of the Child program at Ponderosa. LAURIE CRAWFORD, CHAIR — Thanked Lana for her service and positive attitude. Shared a fundraising idea from a Friends of the Library group from another city. Laurie thanked Jane Newell for her assistance with a historical home letter. MISCELLANEOUS A. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be Monday, June 10, 2013 at the Canyon Hills Library. B.
