Lujan, City Librarian,Guadalupe Gomez, Library Services Manager, Jennifer Foxx, PT Senior Secretary GUESTS:Betsy Kasten, Friends of the Canyon Hills Library I.INTRODUCTION OF VISITORS AND COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS: A.FRIENDS OF THE ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT: None. B.FRIENDSOF THE CANYON HILLS LIBRARY REPORT: Officers have been elected for 2014-15. FOCAL will be celebrating Friends of the Library Week, October 19-25 by asking patrons to support Friends of the Library by purchasing a colorful fall leaf for $1. Abook saleis scheduled forNovember 17-22. A food drive for 2nd Harvest will be featured and those bringing 5 non-perishable food items will receive a free, signed southwestern Lithograph. A donation of 15 Lladro figurines will be available at the sale as well as an outstanding seashell collection, blind stitch embroidery from China, hand painted vases from Japan and much more. Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts from Troops 2630 and 2539 beautified the front entrance and patio areas of Canyon Hills Branch Library,supplies were funded, in part, by the Friends of the Canyon Hills Library.FOCAL continues to share theirgenerous donations with other APL libraries.Aprofessional makeup demonstration at Canyon Hills Library was held on September 24, partially fundedby FOCAL. C.ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION REPORT:Audrey reported that the Doug Lyle Author event was a success with 56 in attendance.The Foundation held a Ruby’s FundraiserSeptember21-27, 20% of the proceeds wentto the Foundation.Members of the Foundation are working hard on the 2015 Author’s Luncheon. Audrey secured funding from the Anaheim Police Department to pay author th expenses. The Foundation is sponsoring a bookmark contest for K-8grade students,the theme is “What I am thankful for” and the winningbookmark will be sent out around Thanksgiving as a fundraiser. D.UNSCHEDULEDORAL COMMUNICATION: Tasneem Watts presented thank you gifts to the Board on behalf of the Library in conjunction with Friends of the Library week. E.WRITTEN COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS: Audrey shared thank you notes from children of the Danbrook Bookmobile stop for the Disney luggage tags and a flyer that was sent out to Roosevelt ElementarySchool students for a reading to your children workshop presented by Angelica Sauceda. Anaheim Public Library Board Meeting October 13, 2014 Page 2 IV.NEW BUSINESS: A.DISCUSSION OF ELECTION OF OFFICERS:A discussion was held on the timing of the elections. The discussion will be on the December agenda as the member who requested the item was unable to attend the meeting. B.NOVEMBER LIBRARY BOARD MEETING:The November Library Board meeting will be cancelled due to a potential lack of quorum, and alack of agenda. V.INFORMATION A.CITY LIBRARIAN’S REPORT: st There will be two recognitionsat the October 21, City Council meeting, the City Council will be recognizing the Friends of the Anaheim Public Library and the Friends of the Canyon Hills Library in honor of National Friends of the Library Week and the Altrusa Creative Writing Contest Collaborative, and a student from Ponderosa Elementary School will be reading her essay on why reading is important to her. The Library has applied for the National Medal for Museum and Library Service, which honors institutions making significant and exceptional contributions to their communities. Staff is working with Board Members to encouragejuniorhigh school and high school students to use their“ACES”library cards. The technology team is working onthe automation system so that students can use their school identification cards as their library card. The Library is thankful to Public Works who will carrythe RFP for the Euclid/Sunkist Renovation. Staff is working on marketing the collection as part of the 2015 Initiativeto increase circulation of materials. B.PUBLICITY:Included in packet. C.LEGISLATIVE UPDATE: None. VII.MONTHLY RECOGNITION OF SUPPORT/CERTIFICATE BY BOARD MEMBERS: None. VIII.BOARD ITEMS MICHELLE MAJEWSKI –Discussed meeting with library staff on how to encourage students who signed up for library cards through ACES to use their card. KENNETH SHIMOGAWA –Shared ideas to promote library card usage to students. DAVID ROBERT “D.R.” HEYWOOD, VICE CHAIR –None. Linell was happy to present the Library Board Certificateof Recognitionto the staff of the Hermosa Village Bookmobile stop.
