We are looking forward to a grand opening during September 2016 for National Library Card sign up month. The Anaheim Public Library had its first Anaheim Reads program with the Maltase Falcon, by Dashiell Hammett. Partnering with the Anaheim Police Department and the Chance `Cheater, there was a month long series of activities and programs around this book and Police activities. One of our most successful programs was a CS1(Crime Scene Investigation) Workshop held as part of Anaheim Reads during which more than 90 teens visited various stations learning forensics skills such as fingerprinting, ballistics, and bone identification in order to solve a murder based on The Maltese Falun. The children's book at that same time was the Malted Falcon, part of the Chet Gecko series by Bruce Hale. These programs were done without any City funding as $11,000 was raised via community support groups. Children's Services had a stellar year visiting and providing quality programs and services to the children of Anaheim. We increased our visits to local. elementary schools by 19% and introduced 40% more students to their community libraries. We also offer a larger variety of programming that brought in 7% more children and their families. Library staff participated in Read Across America events, celebrated diverse and multicultural holidays through storyties, and offered special program such a Bedtime Math and Saturday STEM activities. Central Library piloted a new reading program called 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Reading Program. This program is to support the development of early literacy skills in children ages 0-4 by encouraging parents to reading with their child every day. From Zumba to Sensory Storytimes to monthly art, APL libraries had a diverse offering of program for the children and families of Anaheim. • Total programs 3.900 - Increase in programming 3% • Total audience 125,609 - Increase in attendance 7% ® School visits 474 - Increase in visits 19% • Total Attendance 19,22.2 - Increase in attendance 40% Anaheim Public Library Board of Trustees Report to City Council September 20, 2016 Page 3 During the 2015/16 fiscal year, Teen services hosted 170 programs, creating an ongoing safe place for teens to gather, learn, be engaged, and build relationships. Regular programming included STEAM (Science Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) workshops, book and film discussions, and weekly gaming; days. 2015 Teen Summer Reading Program participation more than doubled compared with 2014, the result of a more robust teen collection, program dates that better fit teen schedules, and teens visiting the library with greater frequency. APL was also a proud participant in the STeP (Skills for Teen Parents) program funded by the California State Library, The series of 10 workshops taught life and parenting skills to teen mothers -to -be and allowed them to develop a support network of community resources and new friends in the same life situation. The Library is continuing "Project ACES." The "ACES" project (A Card for Every Student) is a ground -breaking; initiative between the Anaheim Public Library and the Anaheim Union High School District. Servite High School joined the Project ACES in May 2016 when their students obtained access to library resources. This project is being streamlined allowing every student access to all. Anaheim Public Library electronic resources. There are approximately 31,000 students in the District. To date, over 18,000 junior high and high school students have an Anaheim. Public Library card. The Anaheim Public Library eCard offers student the use of free eBooks and online databases. The Anaheim Public Library is pleased to partner with and offer support to the elementary school district as well. A new search feature in the library catalog allows students and parents to search books by reading level to see what titles are available in the library. For the third year in a row, we are partnering with. the Ponderosa Elementary School and the Altrusa Club to offer a Creative Writing Contest to the students there. In Fiscal Year 2016/17 we will: Expand services to children and teens, offering after school STEAM programs, including computer coding and sewing workshops; educational workshops covering health, job skills, college preparation, and more; and supporting bilingualism through programming and an expanded YA Spanish collection. Anaheim Public Library Board of Trustees Report to City Council September 20, 2016 Page 4 Engage the entire community by offering the NEA Big Read in partnership with the Altrusa Club and the Anaheim Fire Department. The book chosen for The NEA (National Endowment for the Arts) Big Read is Fahrenheit 451. While many events will be open to the entire community, programs specific to teens will include a city-wide art and poetry contest, robotics workshops, and a presentation by Ray Bradbury's official biographer. This month-long run of community- based literacy and special events will run from. January 27 to February 25, 2017. 9 Reopen the Euclid/Sunkist Branch Libraries. The Library Board recommends City support for the library's e -book collection. Downloads of electronic books and electronic audio -books has been funded by the Anaheim Public Library Foundation and has turned into the most successful circulating collection in the Anaheim Public Library system. Titles in this collection include Spanish language titles, teen and children's reading level, educational, popular, and include downloadable audio books. Furthermore, they are adaptable to mobile devices including cell phones, However, the Foundation's fundraising efforts have not been as successful as in previous years and can no longer support this highly sought after resource. We recommend that the City of Anaheim increase the Library's budget by $112,000 to support e -book content, which includes a 512,000 annual platform fee. Because the publishers' terms require that many titles will expire from the collection after one year or after a certain number of check outs, this collection will diminish in size and quality if it is not funded, The Library Board is very proud of the many accomplishments of the Anaheim Public Library Fiscal Year 2015/16, particularly the partnerships they have established to benefit the community. We look forward to the exciting programs and services that are planned in Fiscal Year 201.6/1.7. Respectfully submitted: f, David Robert "D.R." Heywood, Chair
