Golf 2005/03/24 i • GOLF COMMISSION MINUTES March 24, 2005 —4:00 p.m. COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chairman Gaby Vice-Chairman Wright Commissioner Raab Commissioner Schultz COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Commissioner Kresal CITY STAFF PRESENT: Michael Lautenbach, Bob Johns, Dave Johansen, Gail Barruga VALLEY CREST GOLF: Kevin Neal, Golf Course Superintendent, Anaheim Hills CALL TO ORDER Chairman Gaby called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m. PUBLIC COMMENT Commissioner Schultz introduced Mr. Bob Rudesill, Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Anaheim Hills Golf Club. Mr. Rudesill stated he has played over 100 rounds of golf at Anaheim Hills and loves the golf course. Mr. Rudesill stated he has noticed a lot of tree/bush cuttings left in the canyons and asked if the cuttings will be mulched and used by the maintenance company? Mr. Rudesill also asked why trees are not replaced when they are removed? He referenced the Oak trees that were removed at Anaheim Hills. Michael Lautenbach stated Valley Crest will remove the cuttings. Michael stated when a huge branch from an Oak tree fell on the course(near#18), a tree specialist was hired to evaluate the trees at Anaheim Hills. The consultant's report identified two Oak trees were deceased and needed to be removed for safety reasons. Kevin Neal reported Valley Crest will develop a detailed tree management program for each course. Any replacement of trees would be made with indigenous species specific to the area. Mr. Rudesill stated members of the Anaheim Hills Golf Club have suggested donating funds to purchase replacement trees for the course. Michael Lautenbach will review the approximate costs for the purchase of replacement of trees. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES Commissioner Schultz made a Motion, seconded by Vice-Chairman Wright,to accept the Golf Commission Meeting Minutes of February 24, 2005. Motion passed. ACTIVITY REPORTS A. Golf Operations Manager Update Commissioner Schultz asked for an update on the parking lot lights at Anaheim Hills. Michael stated the new lights were working and the old light fixtures are under repair. Commissioner Schultz asked if the new Driving Range fence at Dad Miller will be marked "OB"or will there be rule adjustments? Bob Johns stated,to save on multiple rulings, the fence and poles will be marked"OB." i • GOLF COMMISSION MINUTES MARCH 24, 2005 Page Two Commissioner Schultz complimented Kevin Neil, on the improvements to the Anaheim Hills course since his arrival at the course. He asked if the sand traps could be raked differently to prevent a"bubble"effect at the top, also he notice the yardage stripes on the cart paths needed repainting. Vice-Chairman Wright asked how the condiment counter will be shaded? Michael Lautenbach stated the food concessionaire is responsible for this item. Commissioner Schultz asked what types of GPS systems the City is considering. Michael Lautenbach provided information on new GPS systems available with an option to offset the higher cost through advertisements. Vice-Chairman Wright and Commissioner Schultz both stated they were not in favor of advertisements. B. Course Condition Report Dave Johansen reported the two new Golf Course Superintendents have made positive impacts to their respective courses. At Anaheim Hills the ball washing machines have been changed out, restrooms painted, and the poles were refurbished. Dave Johansen reported the greens were aerified at Dad Miller. C. Director of Golf's Report Bob Johns reported Nick Kumpis, Director of Instruction, met with the Anaheim Hills Golf Club and was well received. In May he will meet with Dad Miller's golf club. The rain slowed the"jump start"for his programs. Staff is working on preparation for the City Championship in late April. Chairman Gaby asked if Mr. Kumpis was able to promote his programs at any of the area schools during Easter break? Bob stated that he had and has several sign ups. FINANCIAL REPORTS A. February Financial Summary Michael Lautenbach reported the trend experienced over the last several months due to the rainy weather continued with lower figures in all areas of golf except food and beverage. Michael Lautenbach stated the Friday/Saturday music at Anaheim Hills ended due to lack of attendance. Chairman Gaby asked where the event was advertised as she hadn't seen any ads. Michael Lautenbach reported Orin stated he did a lot of local advertising. OLD BUSINESS A. Dad Miller Golf Course Modifications Michael Lautenbach provided the Commissioners Valley Crest's construction schedule for Dad Miller. Anaheim Hills Golf Course Flag Commissioner Schultz complimented staff on the placement of the flag in the lobby at Anaheim Hills Golf Course. Michael Lautenbach stated he is obtaining quotes for a permanent flag pole to be located near the cart barn. NEW BUSINESS Michael Lautenbach asked the Commissioners for volunteers to present awards at the City's Tournament in April. Commissioner Schultz requested practice traps with a fence be installed at Anaheim Hills near the westside of the driving range. Commissioner Schultz asked about the status of the capital improvement projects list. Michael Lautenbach stated it would be placed on the Golf Commission agenda for the Commissioners to prioritize the projects. Vice-Chairman Wright asked if shrubs could be planted on the#2 hole,to provide screening for the ladies tee box from the street and the status on the name plates for the maintenance staff. Kevin Neil stated he will review the area for the shrubs and the name plates are on order and will be issued when received. Commissioner Schultz asked about the progress on the slope between Anaheim Hills and the Nohl Villa condominiums. Michael Lautenbach stated Nohl Villas proposed providing all the plants if the City would maintain the slope. Michael Lautenbach stated the City does not maintain private property with taxpayers funds. Michael Lautenbach stated the City will install more shrubs and plants on the City's portion of the slope. ADJOURNMENT Vice-Chairman Wright made a Motion, seconded by Commissioner Schultz to adjourn the meeting to April 28, 2005, City Hall East, 200 S. Anaheim Blvd., 4th Floor, Conference Room #1. The Motion passed. There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 5:10 p.m.
