Library 2019/05/13ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTES MEETING LOCATION DATE/TIME Haskett Library May 13, 2019 2650 W. Broadway 5:00 p.m. Anaheim, CA 92804 CALL TO ORDER – The agenda having been posted on May 9, 2019, the regular meeting of the Anaheim Public Library Board of Trustees was called to order by Chair Laviguer at 5:04 p.m. PRESENT:Dr. Roberto Baeza, David Laviguer, Linda Newby, Stan Oftelie ABSENT:Rose Chen STAFF:Audrey Lujan, City Librarian, Jennifer Foxx, PT Management Assistant, Guadalupe Gomez, Library Services Manager, Joe Purtell, Supervising Librarian I.INTRODUCTION OF VISITORS AND COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS: A.ADMINSTER OATH TO LIBRARY BOARD MEMBER TO DR. ROBERTO BAEZA: The Oath or Affirmation of Allegiance for Public Office and Employees was administered to Dr. Roberto Baeza. B.FRIENDS OF THE ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT: Their next sale is June 1, 2019, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Central Library. C.FRIENDS OF THE CANYON HILLS LIBRARY: Canyon Hills Library is preparing for the Summer Reading Program which will be hosted June 10 – July 27, 2019. A number of special activities will be based on the theme “It’s Showtime.” Upcoming information sessions planned for the East Region Libraries include: a cooking demonstration, painting, introduction to 3-D printing, introduction to Spanish speaking, and information about obtaining citizenship D.ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION REPORT: The Foundation is happy to report that they made almost $32,000 at the Mystery Authors Luncheon. They thanked all that helped, attended, and participated; they really appreciate the support. Their next meeting is May 16, 2019, when Library staff will present their Wish List to the Foundation Board of Directors. The Foundation will then decide how they can best help the Library. They are also working hard on the next Mystery Authors Luncheon which will be April 19, 2020 when they will be celebrating the 25th Anniversary. They are getting ready to kick- off a membership drive at the end of June. E.UNSCHEDULED ORAL COMMUNICATION: Guadalupe highlighted the programs at Haskett Library and Ponderosa Joint-Use Library. F.WRITTEN COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS: Audrey shared a thank you from the Anaheim Public Library Foundation to the Board for their sponsorship and notes from Library patrons thanking the Bookmobile, Euclid, and Central Library staff. Letters from The Los Angeles Times Events Team and LA Liberia thanking Angelica Sauceda and Byron Adams for their participating in the LA Times Festival of Books. II.APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE APRIL 8, 2019 MEETING: The minutes were approved as presented. III.UNFINISHED BUSINESS: None. ITEM # 04 Anaheim Public Library Board Meeting May 13, 2019 Page 2 IV.NEW BUSINESS: A.DESKSTATS: Joe Purtell shared information on the DeskStat software that employees use to track data on patron assistance. This information is used to record statistics on patron assistance which has been declining. Reasons for the reduction include employees not always logging the interactions, which is being corrected, the use of libraries which is directly impacted by the economy, and declining school enrollment. B.BOOKMOBILE BUDGET: This item was postponed to the June meeting. V.INFORMATION A.ANAHE’IM FIRST: Linda shared that the Advisory Board positions have been filled and the Board is recruiting for district members. B.CITY LIBRARIAN’S REPORT: The Board discussed the upcoming Anaheim Public Library Report to City Council on the condition of the libraries for Fiscal Year 2018/19 per ARTICLE IX. APPOINTIVE BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS, Section 908. Audrey thanked Linda Newby for her donation of a Kindle that will be used to teach patrons how to download eBooks from the Library’s collection, etc. Library staff is meeting with the Anaheim Elementary School District and Altrusa to expand to the Creative Writing Contest. Audrey shared Certificates of Recognition and Proclamations for National Library Week and the launch of the new Mobile Library from Anaheim City Council Member Stephen Faessel, Senator Ling Ling Chang, U.S. Congressman Lou Correa, Assemblymember Tom Daly, and Assemblymember Quirk-Silva. Anaheim Public Utilities included an insert promoting Project ACES with the utility bills sent to Anaheim residents. Anaheim Public Library received the Golden Hub of Innovation Award for Community Investment by the Association of California Cities - Orange County. APL was recognized for Project ACES (A Card for Every Student) program. The Community Investment category is awarded to “Innovators for community investment that add value to Cities through increasing quality of life, community aesthetics, providing services that resident’s request”. All Anaheim Public Libraries will open at 2:00 p.m. on June 5, 2019 to allow for a staff development day. C.BUDGET: Budget presentations are scheduled for June 4, 2019. D.LEGISLATIVE UPDATE: None. VI.ACTIVITY REPORTS A.STATISTICS: None. B.ACTIVITY REPORTS: None. C.MONTHLY RECOGNITION OF SUPPORT/CERTIFICATE BY BOARD MEMBERS: The Board recognized Julian Navarro for donating food from his food truck for the Mobile Library launch. Angelica Sauceda and Byron Adams were also recognized for their participation in the LA Times Festival of Books. Anaheim Public Library Board Meeting May 13, 2019 Page 3 VII.BOARD ITEMS MEMBER LINDA NEWBY: Requested to know if in the future Library cards could be on a key chain or if finger print recognition could be used. MEMBER DR. ROBERTO BAEZA: Thanked Jennifer and Audrey for their assistance acclimating back to the Library Board. VICE CHAIR STAN OFTELIE: None. CHAIR DAVID LAVIGUER: Stated that the Haskett Library restrooms are need of renovation. There are also people camping in front of the Carnegie Building at night. David also requested Board training. VIII.MISCELLANEOUS A.NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be June 10, 2019 at the Canyon Hills Library. B.ADJOURNMENT: Chair Laviguer adjourned the meeting at 6:47 p.m.
