Santa Ana Canyon Rd.5:00 p.m. Anaheim, CA 92808 CALL TO ORDER – The agenda having been posted on August 8, 2019, the regular meeting of the Anaheim Public Library Board of Trustees was called to order by Chair Laviguer at 5:06 p.m. PRESENT:Rose Chen, Shelby Hogan, David Laviguer, Linda Newby, Stan Oftelie STAFF:Thomas Edelblute, Senior Library Services Manager; Jennifer Foxx, PT Management Assistant; Cynthia Hicks, Supervising Librarian GUESTS:Kris Lasher, Friends of the Canyon Hills Library I.INTRODUCTION OF VISITORS AND COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS: A.ADMINSTER OATH TO LIBRARY BOARD MEMBER TO SHELBY HOGAN: The Oath or Affirmation of Allegiance for Public Office and Employees was administered to Shelby Hogan. B.FRIENDS OF THE ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT: The next multi-media sale at Central Library is Saturday, September 7, 2019, 10:00 am – 4:00 p.m. Nancy Carlberg and Diane Sargent have been picking up lots of donations. The Friends are in search of new sources of income. For a nominal fee Nancy Carlberg will host genealogy programs. Nancy has written several books on the subject. C.FRIENDS OF THE CANYON HILLS LIBRARY: Successful programs for readers of all ages were offered this summer involving the arts, music, information, and cooking were presented. Teen and Young Adult volunteers managed a busy Summer Reading Program. The Friends of Canyon Hills hosted a successful Book Sale last month. Their large scale sale will be held in November. The reading garden which opened in June has been a popular section of the Library. They are investigating possibilities to add to the planter section of this area. D.ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION REPORT: The Foundation is pleased to announce that the theme for their 25th Annual Mystery Authors Luncheon is Sinister Shenanigans. The Luncheon will be held on Sunday April 19, 2020. The moderator is award winning author Allison Brennan who will moderate the panel of other award winning authors Tim Hallinan, Catriona McPherson, and Mike Befeler. These guest authors like to add a bit of humor to their mysteries so the event should be lots of fun and special to celebrate their 25th. Several Board Officers will be meeting with Chloe Van Stralendorff to strategize their marketing options for their biggest event of the year. The Foundation also continues to accept membership dues from returning members as well as welcoming new members on board. E.UNSCHEDULED ORAL COMMUNICATION: Cynthia Hicks shared that both Canyon Hills Library and East Anaheim Branch Library had very successful Sumer Reading Programs. F.WRITTEN COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS: None. II.APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE JULY 8, 2019 MEETING: The minutes were approved as presented. Anaheim Public Library Board Meeting August 12, 2019 Page 2 III.UNFINISHED BUSINESS: A.ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL ON THE CONDITION OF THE LIBRARIES FOR FISCAL YEAR 2018/19 PER ARTICLE IX. APPOINTIVE BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS, Section 908: The Board reviewed the letter and requested a ten year comparison of patron count be included in the letter. A revised draft will be included in the September Library Board Packet. IV.NEW BUSINESS: A.NEW DIGITAL COLLECTION: Cynthia Hicks presented information on the new digital collection provider, cloudLibrary which replaces OverDrive, The content was transferred in July and the Library saw a huge increase in downloads in August. This new platform connects Anaheim with 14 other libraries in California increasing the amount of items available to patrons. B.ANAHEIM/PLACENTIA CONSORTIUM UPDATE: Thomas informed the Board that the dissolution of the Anaheim and Placentia Consortium will be completed on August 15, 2019. The benefit to the public is that they now can have library cards from both Anaheim and Placentia Libraries, doubling the number of materials available to them, including online resources. V.INFORMATION A.ANAHE’IM FIRST: Linda shared the Library’s list of items they would like to have funded. The first Town Hall Meeting will be held at the Ponderosa Joint-Use Library. B.CITY LIBRARIAN’S REPORT: The list of judging opportunities for the AESD/Altrusa/Anaheim Public Library Creative Writing Contest for all 23 schools in Anaheim was shared with the Board. C.BUDGET: None. VI.ACTIVITY REPORTS A.STATISTICS: Stan continues to be concerned with the decline in patron count and noticed a particular decrease in the East Region for June. B.ACTIVITY REPORTS: None. C.MONTHLY RECOGNITION OF SUPPORT/CERTIFICATE BY BOARD MEMBERS: The Board recognized Irv Pickler, who passed away recently for his service as a previous member of the Library Board as well as his many contributions to the City of Anaheim. Library staff member Romina Irizarry was recognized for her customer service. VII.BOARD ITEMS MEMBER ROSE CHEN: Handed out bookmarks to the Board from her visit to China. Anaheim Public Library Board Meeting August 12, 2019 Page 3 MEMBER LINDA NEWBY: Was happy to see Audrey and the Library featured in the Anaheim Community Services Activity Guide. She continues to be impressed with the amount of publicity she sees for the Anaheim Public Library. MEMBER SHELBY HOGAN: Is excited to be a member of the Library Board. VICE CHAIR STAN OFTELIE: None. CHAIR DAVID LAVIGUER: None. VIII.MISCELLANEOUS A.NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be September 9, 2019, at the Sunkist Library. B.ADJOURNMENT: Chair Laviguer adjourned the meeting in honor of Irv Pickler at 5:54 p.m.
