RES-2022-095 RESOLUTION NO. 2 0 2 2-0 9 5 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ANAHEIM SUPPORTING LOCAL PUBLIC COMMUNITY SCHOOLS WHEREAS, the City of Anaheim, acting through the Anaheim City Council and the City's officers and employees, is responsible for serving the needs of its residents, businesses, and visitors; and WHEREAS, the Anaheim Union High School District (AUHSD) provides secondary education in grades 7 through 12 for a racially, ethnically, and culturally diverse student body at thirteen junior high schools, high schools, and alternative education centers across the City of Anaheim; and WHEREAS, most of the 29,000 students served by the AUHSD live in the City of Anaheim, their own futures being interconnected with the future economic and social well being of the City; and WHEREAS, the Anaheim Educational Pledge, which includes as partners the City of Anaheim, University of California Irvine (UCI), California State University Fullerton, and North Orange County Community College District, has been tremendously successful in AUHSD with students achieving the highest grade point averages and retention rates in Orange County at UCI, with similar results at other feeder higher education institutions; and WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees of the AUHSD, through policy and resolution, has demonstrated its commitment to the creation and maintenance of community schools to collaborate with community-based organizations, local governments, and businesses to increase the resources and services available to our students, our families, and the broader community to address the challenges of mental health, housing, access to health care, workplace preparedness, and mentorships and internships in the Anaheim community; and WHEREAS, Sycamore Junior High School and Anaheim High School have piloted the community schools model, serving as a hub for students, parents, and families within our community to access basic services such as health, dental, legal, social services, and other needed services; and WHEREAS, on or about May 18, 2022, the California State Board of Education awarded a five-year California Community Schools Partnership Program implementation grant of $23,275,000 for 13 schools in AUHSD, as well as $7,325,000 to AUHSD's feeder elementary schools in the City of Anaheim, including Anaheim Elementary School District, Centralia Elementary School District, and Magnolia Elementary School District; and WHEREAS, AUHSD's work in the area of community schools within the City of Anaheim has drawn statewide attention, including a visit by the State Superintendent of Public Education to a ribbon cutting for the new community school resource center at Sycamore Junior High School on September 1, 2022; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Anaheim wishes to provide its support to the implementation and maintenance of community schools to serve the needs of the community at the public schools within the City of Anaheim. NOW THEREFORE, be it resolved by the City Council of the City of Anaheim that the City of Anaheim supports the AUHSD community schools model and is committed to its success, in continued collaboration with AUHSD, to create more cohesion and synergy to better address the needs of the residents in the City of Anaheim.
