Library 2019/12/05ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTES MEETING LOCATION DATE/TIME Founders’ Park December 9, 2019 400 N. West 5:00 p.m. Anaheim, CA 92805 CALL TO ORDER – The agenda having been posted on December 5, 2019, the regular meeting of the Anaheim Public Library Board of Trustees was called to order by Chair Laviguer at 5:08 p.m. PRESENT:Shelby Hogan, David Laviguer Linda Newby, Stan Oftelie ABSENT:Rose Chen STAFF:Audrey Lujan, City Librarian; Jane Newell, Library Services Manager; Joe Purtell, Supervising Librarian; Nichole Grimes, Library Specialist; Jennifer Foxx, PT Management Assistant GUESTS:Ginny Gardner, Anaheim Public Library Foundation I.INTRODUCTION OF VISITORS AND COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS: A.FRIENDS OF THE ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT: The Multi Media sale on December 7, 2019, raised $516.29. This was in part due to the Winter Reading Program Kick-Off featuring Anaheim Duck’s Mascot Wild Wing. The special edition Titan Library cards have raised almost $5,000 in funding for the Friends. In addition, sales of staff T-shirts have raised $420 and a "quick sale" to make room for more inventory brought in another $132. Donations of paperback books are always welcome, especially non-fiction. Children's books and magazines always sell well. The Friends have pledged over $27,000 in funding for Library programming and materials for 2020. B.FRIENDS OF THE CANYON HILLS LIBRARY: Friends of Canyon Hills Library (FOCAL) are pleased with their successful Book Sale held during November. With many books available, prices were extremely reasonable and a large quantity of books were sold. FOCAL has elected the following officers for 2020. President – Karen Lockwood, Vice President – Cindy Guziak, Secretary – Kris Lasher, Treasurer – Berdella Smith, Membership - Louise Fry, Book Selling, Donation Management – Betsy Kasten and Donna Clark. C.ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION REPORT: Thanked the Board for becoming members of the Foundation. They are planning for their 25th Annual Mystery Authors’ Luncheon on Sunday, April 19, 2020. Invitations will be mailed out in January. Ginny thanked Chloe Van Stralendorff and her team for their assistance with the flyers and invitations. She also thanked Chloe, Donald Hilliard Jr., and Thomas Edelblute for solving their website issues. The Foundation’s new website address is: anaheimlibraryfoundation.com. D.UNSCHEDULED ORAL COMMUNICATION: David presented a Library Board Certificate of Recognition to Jane Newell for securing the National Parks Grant and being the Curator of the “I am an American: A Time of Fear” Exhibition. E.WRITTEN COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS: Audrey shared a heartfelt letter from a patron to Kelly Martin, Circulation employee for her kindness and exemplary customer service. Audrey stated that this is indicative of the customer service all of our staff provides. ITEM # 01 Anaheim Public Library Board Meeting December 9, 2019 Page 2 II.APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE OCTOBER 14, 2019 MEETING: The minutes were approved as presented. III.UNFINISHED BUSINESS: A.VIRTUAL BOARD REPORT REVISIONS: Jennifer Foxx and Joe Purtell presented the revised draft Virtual Board Report with revisions suggested by the Library Board. The new format will replace the previous format in future Library Board Packets. IV.NEW BUSINESS: A.LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING SCHEDULE: MOTION: That the Board approve the Library Board of Trustees Meeting Schedule as presented. M/S: LN/SH 4 Ayes. V.INFORMATION A.ANAHEI’M FIRST: No report. B.CITY LIBRARIAN’S REPORT: Audrey shared that Jane Newell has been doing many community presentations on various topics on Anaheim History, most recently she presented to the Anaheim Historical Society. Joe Purtell was awarded a $100,000 grant to transform the Central Information Desk into a HUB that will house Teen STEAM Kits, desks that can be arranged as needed, standing/sitting desks for staff, and provides a place for the 3D Printer. The Anaheim Magazine featured an article on the next Big Read. This program is funded by the NEA Grant, Altrusa, Anaheim Public Library Foundation, Friends of the Anaheim Public Library, Friends of the Canyon Hills Library, and Kiwanis of Greater Anaheim. Audrey thanked Christopher Downing, Superintendent for his assistance in allowing Anaheim Public Library programs to be advertised in the Anaheim Elementary School District Newsletter. This publication goes to over 17,000 families in Anaheim. The Library Rules of Conduct are still being reviewed by the City Attorney’s Office. They are currently waiting to see what the ruling is on concealed weapons which may have an impact on Libraries. C.BUDGET: None. VI.ACTIVITY REPORTS A.STATISTICS: Updated statistics will be provided in January. B.ACTIVITY REPORTS: None. C.MONTHLY RECOGNITION OF SUPPORT/CERTIFICATE BY BOARD MEMBERS: The Board recognized Angelica Sauceda for creating and implementing an amazing first ever Spanish Language Book Fair and Bilingual Storytime Workshops event for Southern California Librarians/Educators. Anaheim Public Library Board Meeting December 9, 2019 Page 3 VII.BOARD ITEMS MEMBER LINDA NEWBY: Enjoyed the Anaheim History Trivia night at the Library and suggested the Library hold more. Linda requested a tour of Central Library at the January meeting. MEMBER SHELBY HOGAN: None. VICE CHAIR STAN OFTELIE: Poet Laureate candidates are being reviewed and the committee is hoping to have a recommendation by the end of the year. CHAIR DAVID LAVIGUER: None. VIII.MISCELLANEOUS A.NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be January 13, 2020, at Central Library. B.ADJOURNMENT: Chair Laviguer adjourned the meeting at 6:12 p.m.
