Library 2020/12/14ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTES MEETING LOCATION DATE/TIME Central Library December 14, 2020 500 W. Broadway 4:00 p.m. Anaheim, CA 92805 CALL TO ORDER – The agenda having been posted on December 10, 2020, the regular meeting of the Anaheim Public Library Board of Trustees was called to order by Chair Laviguer at 4:04 p.m. PRESENT:Rose Chen, Shelby Hogan, David Laviguer, Linda Newby, Stan Oftelie STAFF:Audrey Lujan, City Librarian; Jennifer Foxx, PT Management Assistant I.INTRODUCTION OF VISITORS AND COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS: A.FRIENDS OF THE ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT: The Friends of Anaheim Public Library budget committee met. Normally the Friends commit $27,000 each year to support programming, etc. For 2021 the Friends are able to commit $14,000 due to the decline in income from book sales due to the pandemic. The Friends were making $1,000 a month in the book nook; due to the closures income has been drastically reduced. B.FRIENDS OF THE CANYON HILLS LIBRARY: Friends of Canyon Hills Library (FOCAL) held an outdoor sale where they made $500.00. ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION REPORT: The Foundation had a very successful membership drive. The Foundation encourages everyone to sign up for Amazon Smile and designate Anaheim Public Library Foundation as the recipient. There will be an online author event on January 25,, 2021, with award winning mystery author Catriona McPherson. The 25th annual Mystery Author’s Luncheon is scheduled for October 24,, 2021. The Foundation thanks members of the board and other library groups for your support this year and would like to wish everyone a Happy Holiday season. C.UNSCHEDULED ORAL COMMUNICATION: None D.WRITTEN COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS: Audrey shared a four-page, handwritten letter acknowledging the exemplary service of staff from a patron. She also shared a letter from OC Probation thanking the Library for the donation of permanent loan books that were funded by the Anaheim Public Library Foundation and Friends of the Anaheim Public Library. A letter was sent to Rose Chen from the District Attorney congratulating the Anaheim Public Library for being awarded the John Cotton Dana Public Relations Award. II.APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE OCTOBER 12, 2020 MEETING: The minutes were approved as presented. III.UNFINISHED BUSINESS: A.ELECTION OF VICE CHAIR: MOTION: That the Library Board nominate and elect Stan Oftelie as Vice Chair of the Library Board through the end of his term on the Library Board, June 2021. CENTRAL, CANYON, & HASKETT LIBRARIES REOPENING UPDATE: Audrey reported that Central Library reopened October 26th with 25% capacity. Haskett and Canyon Libraries reopened November 9th with 25% capacity. Capacity was reduced to 20% when the State issued new retail guidelines on December 5th. Patrons have been expressing their appreciation of the re- openings to Library staff. Due to overwhelming patron requests, curbside hours will be expanded from 11am-6pm at Central, Canyon, and Haskett Libraries. B.WELCOME BROCHURE: Audrey shared the revised Welcome Brochure. The previous one listed the rules of conduct, etc. Staff wanted a more welcoming brochure that includes the equity statement, a welcome statement from the City Librarian, privacy statement, available resources, and a map of Anaheim Library locations with hours, etc. Stan suggested adding districts for each location on the next printing. C.LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING SCHEDULE: MOTION: That the Board approve the Library Board of Trustees Meeting Schedule for 2021 as presented. M/S: LN/RC 5 Ayes. V.INFORMATION A.CITY LIBRARIAN’S REPORT: Audrey reported that the lot line adjustment was granted by the City’s Building Division for the Euclid Library project. The Library is offering virtual visits with Santa and hopes to return to in person photos with Santa next year. APL Partnered with Bank of America Regional Offices of Anaheim and Santa Ana to provide gifts for APL’s partnership with CASA OC for foster youth. Bank of America donated over $2,400 in gifts for foster youth which APL passed on to CASA OC. Further partnerships with Bank of America are being explored. Heritage Services received 39 copies of Orange County Memories as a thank you for Jane Newell, and Heritage Services staff’s contributions to the book. The Friends will be selling the books that retail for $44.95. B.BUDGET: The City Council will be having a budget workshop on December 15, 2020. VI.ACTIVITY REPORTS A.STATISTICS: None. B.ACTIVITY REPORTS: None. C.MONTHLY RECOGNITION OF SUPPORT/CERTIFICATE BY BOARD MEMBERS: None. Anaheim Public Library Board Meeting December 14, 2020 Page 3 VII.BOARD ITEMS MEMBER ROSE CHEN: Appreciates what the Library is doing for the community. MEMBER LINDA NEWBY: Looks forward to the Library Board Meeting every month, it’s the best organized and appreciates the Zoom option. MEMBER SHELBY HOGAN: Stated that Anaheim Public Library has gone above and beyond what other Libraries are doing during the pandemic and are front runners for getting the curbside option so quickly. Anaheim Public Library is a role model for libraries across the country. VICE CHAIR STAN OFTELIE: Stated that the process of the Poet Laureate was put on pause when the pandemic began. As the process resumes consideration is being made to remove the requirement that the applicants live in Anaheim and replace it with that applicants must be part of the Anaheim Community. CHAIR LAVIGUER: Thanked staff for the Zoom option and wished everyone a happy holiday. VIII.MISCELLANEOUS A.NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be January 11, 2021, at the Central Library. B.ADJOURNMENT: Chair Laviguer adjourned the meeting at 5:00 p.m.
