Library 2021/12/13ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTES MEETING LOCATION DATE/TIME Central Library December 13, 2021 500 W. Broadway 4:00 p.m. Anaheim, CA 92805 CALL TO ORDER – The agenda having been posted on December 9, 2021, the regular meeting of the Anaheim Public Library Board of Trustees was called to order by Chair Laviguer at 4:03 p.m. PRESENT:Michelle Dang, Shelby Hogan, David Laviguer, Linda Newby ABSENT:Rose Chen STAFF:Audrey Lujan, City Librarian; Jennifer Foxx, PT Management Assistant; Joe Purtell, Supervising Librarian I.INTRODUCTION OF VISITORS AND COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS: A.FRIENDS OF THE ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT: The Friends made $427.02 at their November book sale. The next book sale is scheduled for December 17, 2021. They have scheduled monthly book sales for 2022. The Friends are looking forward to the next Big Read Program. B.FRIENDS OF THE CANYON HILLS LIBRARY: The Friends of Canyon Hills Anaheim Library (FOCAL) enjoyed a recent brunch to celebrate the holidays and their efforts of 2020 and 2021. At this occasion, commendations were given to Anaheim Public Library staff for their creativity and innovative work to provide meaningful library services to the community during the era of COVID prevention restrictions. They appreciated being able to check out materials online and retrieve them curbside, to have daily Library programs available to all ages online, to participate in Summer Reading virtually, and having their Book Discussion Groups continue using Zoom technology. FOCAL is grateful to the City of Anaheim for continuing to fund library services. The staff of Canyon Hills Library was extremely helpful to FOCAL, enabling them to continue their work on a restricted yet appropriate basis. Recently, FOCAL gifted each Anaheim Hills public school’s library with funds to purchase books, in appreciation of their ongoing support of our efforts. During many months of school services being offered remotely and restricted activities on campuses due to COVID, PTA fundraising activities have been restricted. The schools are grateful to FOCAL for their library gifts, and FOCAL is thankful to the Anaheim Hills community for their generous donations. C.ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION REPORT: The Foundation has planned a Zoom program with award winning author Allison Brennan on January 10, 2022. Admission is $5.00. Tickets are available through Eventbrite. The 25th annual Mystery Author’s Luncheon is scheduled for April 24, 2022. Tickets will be available February 1, 2022 through Eventbrite and will be $60 per person or $550 per table. D.UNSCHEDULED ORAL COMMUNICATION: None. E.WRITTEN COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS: None. ITEM # 01 Anaheim Public Library Board Meeting December 13 2021 Page 2 II.APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE OCTOBER 11, 2021 MEETING: The minutes were approved as presented. III.UNFINISHED BUSINESS: None. IV.NEW BUSINESS: A.WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT UPDATE: Joe provided an update on the State Library Grant funded Anaheim Public Library and Anaheim Workforce Connection partnership. Anaheim Workforce Connection provides services to Anaheim residents to get jobs and APL provides the resources to help prepare for those jobs. APL is the first Library in the state to create a borrow type in our online catalog for workforce enrollees to easily find job resources. This grant will help fund marketing as well as a dedicated staff person from Anaheim Workforce Connection that will work directly with the APL. Audrey congratulated Joe Purtell for being so successful on the first grant that he was handed a second year grant. In addition, APL is being used as a model for this grant. B.LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING SCHEDULE: MOTION: That the Board approve the Library Board of Trustees Meeting Schedule for 2022 as presented. M/S: MD/LN 4 Ayes. V.INFORMATION A.CITY LIBRARIAN’S REPORT: Audrey reported that APL collected over $4,000 in gift cards for Foster Care Holiday Gift Drive to be donated to CASA OC. The Library also collected many toys and household items, with a special donation from Bank of America worth more than $25,000. Donations were also received from the APL Foundation, Kiwanis of Greater Anaheim, Friends of Canyon Hills Library, Anaheim Realtors, Senator Josh Newman, Rotary of Anaheim, DEVOTE (Anaheim City employees), AMEA, and many other donors. Audrey shared the Anaheim Community Services Guide advertising Anaheim Reads, the Library’s STEAM Adventures, Career Cove, and Founders’ Park. B.BUDGET: The budget process has started for Fiscal Year 2021/2022. VI.ACTIVITY REPORTS A.STATISTICS: None. B.ACTIVITY REPORTS: None. Anaheim Public Library Board Meeting December 13 2021 Page 3 C.MONTHLY RECOGNITION OF SUPPORT/CERTIFICATE BY BOARD MEMBERS: Michelle recognized staff member Erin Watts for ensuring children are happy and engaged during children’s programs. VII.BOARD ITEMS MEMBER SHELBY HOGAN: None. MEMBER MICHELLE DANG: Shared that her friend is a resident of Buena Park but drives to Anaheim Central Library because it is has the best programming. She also stated that she appreciates the convenience as well as the courteous staff at the COVID testing site in the Central Library parking lot. VICE CHAIR LINDA NEWBY: Enjoyed the NEA Big Read and finds the programs that the Library does in conjunction with the Big Read exceptional. She challenged the other Board Members to read the book for the upcoming Anaheim Reads and/or attend the upcoming programs. CHAIR LAVIGUER: Invited everyone to Founders’ Park on January 8, 2022, for the Victorian Open House Tour from 9:00 a.m. – 12 noon. VIII.MISCELLANEOUS A.NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be January 10, 2022, at the Central Library. B.ADJOURNMENT: Chair Laviguer adjourned the meeting at 4:56 p.m.
