Report to the City Council on the Condition of the Libraries September 12, 2022 Page 3 Anaheim Youth Anaheim Public Library received California State Library Lunch at the Library funding for $18,500. These funds provided children and teen's summer reading and exploration programs and other activities that supported learning, health, and wellness. The Lunch at the Library programs connected Anaheim Public Library with the different school districts it serves (Anaheim Elementary, Anaheim Union High School, Centralia Elementary, Magnolia Elementary, and Savanna School District), Miraloma and Ponderosa Family Resource Centers, Project Access sites, and other community housing projects. During the summer, Anaheim Public Library visited over 15 meal sites. It brought new families to the library where staff connected adult family members and caregivers with essential library resources and services. • As part of the Lunch at the Library initiative, Haskett Branch hosted a 6- week Culinary Arts Program for teens. During this program, teens learned basic culinary skills, essential hospitality best practices, how to prepare to work with food, and trained for a food handler certificate. • With the support of Grandma's House of Hope/Nana's Kidz Program, Haskett Branch and Ponderosa Library held FREE Children's Food Distributions. Each week children received a "kid friendly" food bag, with 400 food bags distributed to children 5 to 18 years old. • In partnership with Centralia School District, Haskett Branch hosted Centralia's Cuisine Food Truck. Students enjoyed a free lunch and activity every Thursday during June and July. • Foster Care Youth — Last fiscal year the Library created the We're Here for You Card to reach out to foster youth to ensure they feel welcome at APL and receive the same level of library access as other children and teens in the community. Anaheim Public Library recently partnered with CASA OC for their annual holiday gift drive and Orangewood Foundation for a Back to School drive. CASA OC is a volunteer organization that supports foster youth. One of their many programs includes providing foster youth with gift cards, toys, and much -needed household items to help reduce the anxiety of the custody hearing experience at the courthouse while they wait for their custody hearing. The holiday gift drive was largely funded by the Anaheim and Santa Ana Regional Offices of Bank of America, Anaheim Rotary Club, Kiwanis, Friends of the Library, and generous individuals. The Orangewood Foundation helps foster youth prepare for independent adulthood, helping them to identify their strengths, attributes and overcome Report to the City Council on the Condition of the Libraries September 12, 2022 Page 4 their challenges to reach their greatest potential. Over 200 backpacks and various other school supplies were donated to the Orangewood Foundation. STEAM Initiatives Anaheim Public Library's STEAM Adventures: Exploration on Wheels (STEAM Van) has completed a year of service. This popular mobile resource travels to sites throughout the City of Anaheim focusing specifically on those in high density and low-income areas. The STEAM Van visits sites on a monthly basis. Programs are always hands-on and provides the participants all materials needed to complete their explorations. There are two styles of programs available to participants depending on the setting — drop -in and workshop. In a drop -in program, participants are able to complete quick exploration of a topic doing a simple experiment or art project. These visits typically last 5-10 minutes. A workshop is 50 minutes in length and is facilitated by the STEAM Team. The workshops cover more in-depth discoveries in a traditional program setting. STEAM Van programs are for preschool through high school aged youth. This complex is for very low-income seniors. What started as a pilot project in March has now become a regular monthly visit with growing popularity. Library staff bring materials for check out, a STEAM activity, giveaways, and connect the seniors with virtual programs offered by the Library. Report to the City Council on the Condition of the Libraries September 12, 2022 Page 5 • The STEAM Van also brings STEAM activities to large community events like Children's Festival and smaller neighborhood events like the Mobile Family Resource Center outreaches. Multiple Anaheim organizations collaborate to bring their resources and information to neighborhoods with the goal of letting residents know about City resources and connecting them to their nearest Family Resource Centers. Since their launch in the fall of 2020, STEAM on the Go! Kits have continued to expand and remain popular. These circulating kits have all the supplies needed to complete several STEAM activities based on variety of topics, ranging from extreme chemistry to mechanical engineering to pointillism. These kits enable hands-on, immersive learning opportunities at home. At present, there are 65 topics and 189 kits with more in the works. We most recently added Extreme STEAM career kits so that we now have four levels of kits: • Bitty Bitz - Ages 2.5-5 • Steam on the Go! Elementary Series - Ages 5-12 • Bitz Challenge -Ages 10-14 • Extreme STEAM Careers - Ages 12+ The original STEAM on the Go! Kits and the STEAM Van were funded by grants and donations, including a $180,000 grant from the California State Library. The initial California State grant ended March 31, 2022. APL Foundation has pledged $8,000 in FY 2022-23 for the ongoing support for STEAM Programming, creation of new kits and replenishing of current kits. • In addition to Exploration on Wheels and the STEAM Kits, each Anaheim Public Library location hosts a variety of STEAM programs monthly. Assisting Anaheim with Economic Recovery Anaheim Public Library (APL) and Anaheim Workforce Connection (AWC) participated in a Workforce Partnership Initiative to build deeper service connections for Anaheim residents. As part of APL's LSTA grant funded programming, Anaheim Public Library opened Career Cove, an AWC staffed service location in the Central Library, allowing the public one-on-one career development assistance within the Central Library. Report to the City Council on the Condition of the Libraries September 12, 2022 Page 6 The grant funded Facebook ads marketing AWC's services and APL's online resources that include LinkedIn Learning, Coursera, SkillShare, and more. A parallel email marketing campaign focused on existing AWC clients. A grant -paid graphic designer prepared ads and designed display signage for public spaces. These displays with QR codes will connectjob seekers to APL and AWC and will be displayed in public and private facilities in Anaheim. • Recruitment events were held at APL's Central Library for the US Postal Service and University of California, Irvine, drawing over 45 jobseekers for interviews. Mother Colony House 165" Anniversary On Saturday, June 4 2022, Heritage Services hosted the 165" birthday celebration of the Mother Colony House at Founders' Park, after the regularly scheduled Open House. Staff and volunteer docents greeted members of the public as they toured the Woelke-Stoffel House, Carriage House agricultural exhibit, and the Mother Colony House. Visitors received swag bags containing the book Historic Buildings of Pioneer Anaheim, written by Leo J. Friis, a set of notecards adomed with a drawing of the Mother Colony House, a wooden fan, and pen that read "Mother Colony House 1857 — 2022". Cupcakes were served and attendees were also offered a Mission Grape, Moreton Bay Fig, or Boysenberry plant to take home and grow for themselves. The ceremony was attended by Council Members Dr. Jose Moreno, Gloria Ma'ae. Avelino Valencia and Council Member Stephen Faessel served as the keynote speaker. Congressman Lou Correa, representing California's 46'h District, read from the Congressional Record where the Mother Colony House was commemorated. Diversity Audit Anaheim Public Library serves in fulfilling the reading needs of a diverse community that consists of people from many backgrounds, cultures, races, sexual orientation, disabilities/abilities, etc. When community members read stories, they look to see themselves represented in those stories. These stories also allow community members to learn about different viewpoints, be exposed to new ideas, and explore the world. This exposure helps build a stronger and more connected community and allows community members to better bridge their differences. Report to the City Council on the Condition of the Libraries September 12, 2022 Page 7 To make sure that APL is offering representation and many perspectives in its book collections, it started a diversity audit of its teen book collections two years ago. In order to quickly perform a diversity audit for its entire print collection, APL partnered with Ingram Library Services to have them perform a diversity audit. This audit was completed in June 2022 and has allowed staff to quickly buy books in the identified areas where more representation is needed. These books provide increased representation to community members in the stories they read. These stories are powerful in illustrating to people the world they live in, and help better connect our community. ALTERNATE FUNDING The Library received almost $140,000 in alternate funding. This funding includes a variety of grants from various organizations dedicated to enhancing literacy. Grant funding was awarded for a variety of programs, including Lunch at the Library, Book to Action to engage adults and children on importance of healing during a time of loss, NEA Big Read, and more. In addition, APL received generous funding support from The Anaheim Public Library Foundation, Friends of the Anaheim Public Library, Friends of the Canyon Hills Library, Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim, and Altrusa International of Anaheim. These organizations supported programming for children and teens, eBooks, Summer Reading Program, STEAM programming and kits, NEA Big Read, and marketing. PLANNED PROJECTS Haskett Makerspace • The Haskett Branch Library will be adding a Makerspace and Media Lab for the community. A Makerspace is a collaborative workspace inside a school, library, or separate public/private facility for making, learning, exploring, and sharing that uses high tech to no tech tools. The Makerspace will be a 650 sq. foot room that will house a CNC (woodworking machine), laser cutter, 3D printing machines, print screen, mug press, Cricut machines (electronic cutting machines), and sewing machines. The Media Lab will be a 440 sq. ft. room that will consist of a Green Screen, recording room, Virtual Reality station, and a Memory Lab (patrons will be able to bring their VHS or photographs and digitize them). • The project is estimated to take 11-13 months to complete and will be largely funded by donations. Report to the City Council on the Condition of the Libraries September 12, 2022 Page 8 Friends Central Library Green Space The final phase of construction was completed. This second phase included the addition of outdoor lighting, a large, covered structure to provide additional shade for staff and the public, and access to electrical outlets for programming needs. A Community Development Block Grant has funded this project as well as funding from the Friends of the Anaheim Public Library. Euclid Library Outdoor Space Enhancements The Euclid Branch of the Anaheim Public Library was built in 1976 and the original building remains the same size 42 years later. With population growth and community demands for expanded public space and performance areas, Community Development Block Grant funds were granted to landscape the 3,095 square foot outdoor space on the south side of Euclid Library. Work to be done includes a new ADA accessible door to access the area, leveling and landscaping of the ground, new irrigation, lighting, and security cameras. This will allow the Library to do more outdoor programs for all ages and all abilities. NEA Big Read: "There There" • The 2023 Big Read selection is "There There" by Tommy Orange. Programming will focus on local Native American communities. Staff will bring in multiple tribal leaders to do various presentations and activities. Local artisans will teach skills at constructing programs to engage Anaheim patrons in an educational foundation of local cultural history. The Library Board is very proud of the many accomplishments of the Anaheim Public Library for Fiscal Year 2021/22, particularly the recognition they are receiving for all of the services they provide. The Library Board is once again thankful to the Anaheim City Council for their support of the Anaheim Public Library and the restoration of hours. We look forward to the exciting projects, programs and services that are planned in Fiscal Year 2022/23. ectfully submitted: v David Laviguer, Chair
