Senior Citizen 2022/11/17MINUTES SENIOR CITIZEN COMMISSION November 17, 2022 COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: STAFF PRESENT: Janet Brown, Chair Wendy Hernandez, Community Services Supervisor Shirley McCracken, Vice-Chair Maureen Richardson, Community Services Coordinator Frances Noteboom Beth Lapkowski, Administrative Assistant Ray Shah Paul Vicknair Nicholas Yagar A G E N D A A C T I O N T A K E N 1. CALL TO ORDER: Chair Brown called the meeting to order at 2:15 p.m. 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Chair Brown led the Commission in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. 3. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Chair Brown presented the minutes of the September 15, 2022 meeting. Commissioner Vicknair made a motion for approval of the minutes, seconded by Commissioner Yagar. Minutes were approved unanimously. 4. PUBLIC COMMENTS: None. 5. NEW BUSINESS: A. Anaheim Senior Wheels Program Wendy Hernandez introduced Maureen Richardson, Anaheim Community Services Coordinator, who shared a presentation on the Anaheim Senior Wheels Program and answered questions. She also described the upcoming changes in the meal programs to seniors due to the end of COVID funding and answered questions. B. Discuss Draft Letter to City Council: Chair Brown inquired about the status of hiring the additional staff for senior services that was approved by City Council. Wendy Hernandez explained that the recruitments are ongoing and she should have updates to report back in January. Chair Brown stated that she will be drafting a letter to City Council that would thank them for the additional funding allocated to the Active Older Adult Program at the June 21, 2022 City Council meeting, and that will also include their desire to have a stand-alone senior center that she will have distributed to the other commissioners for their review. Wendy explained that the commission would need to have a discussion and vote for approval of any letter, which would then be submitted to the Community Services Director for review and would submit it to the Mayor and City Council on behalf of the Senior Citizen Commision. Commissioner Vicknair commented that the seniors would use the facility mostly in the daytime and felt it would be important to make it available for other use in the evenings in order to make it tenable. 6. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Chair Brown asked about the status of commissioners due to the recent election. Wendy indicated terms are ending for Commissioners Vicknair, Yagar, Shah and Vice-Chair McCracken in December 2022will end in 2024. Those with terms ending in December are invited to continue on the commission until such time as a new commissioner has been appointed in their place. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS: Chair Brown announced that Community Action Partnership of Orange County has a food program for seniors as another option available to them. Wendy Hernandez reminded commissioners that they should refer those with food insecurity or who may need other assistance to the Downtown Anaheim Community Center, or the Ponderosa and Miraloma Park Family Resource Centers. A. Wendy Hernandez shared information about the partnership with Anaheim Public Utilities that was created as a result of a request by the Senior Citizen Commission. They have been providing a space in their newsletter for customized information about the active older adult program, such as the transportation program and meal program, etc. The commission discussed topics that have been recommended to City Council in the past and the possibility of doing so in the future. 9. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Brown adjourned the meeting at 3:20 p.m. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, January 19, 2023, at 2:00 p.m.
