Subject: Opposition to Proposed Utility Fee Increases (Solid Waste and Wastewater)
Dear Mayor and Members of the City Council,
I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed increases in utility fees, specifically
those related to solid waste and wastewater services in the City of Anaheim.
While I understand the City's responsibility to maintain infrastructure and provide reliable services,
these proposed rate increases come at'a time when many residents are already facing significant
financial strain. The rising cost of housing, food, and other essentials has made it increasingly
difficult for households to stay afloat, and additional increases in essential utility services will only
add to that burden.
Solid waste and wastewater services are fundamental to public health and daily living. Increasing
these rates disproportionately affects working families, seniors on fixed incomes, and individuals
who have little flexibility in managing these unavoidable expenses. Unlike discretionary spending,
these costs cannot be reduced or avoided, making any increase particularly impactful.
As a resident of Anaheim, I am also concerned about the broader ripple effects of these increases.
Higher utility costs can place added pressure on property owners and small landlords, often
Leading to higher housing costs for renters. In addition, small businesses —many of which are still
navigating economic recovery —may struggle to absorb these added expenses, potentially
impacting their ability to operate and serve the community.
Transparency and community engagement are also essential. Residents deserve clear information
about why these increases are necessary and how the additional revenue will be used to directly
benefit the community.
Anaheim is strongest when its residents are supported, not further strained. I ask that you carefully
consider the real impact these increases will have and pursue solutions that are more equitable
and sustainable for our community.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Marvin Flores
