Dear Mayor, and City Council Members:
My name is Bill Erickson. My wife and I live at 205 S. Owens Drive in the Mohler Loop area of Anaheim
Hills. This area is designated to allow lot sizes of one half acres and larger.
We moved here from a tract size lot in Placentia in 1979, because we wanted a “country feel”, and less
housing density.
We bought a seven tenths acre lot on Owens Drive. We built our “Dream Home” in 1979.
We almost lost our home in October 1982 when there as a massive wildfire in Deer Canyon
(YES: THAT DEER CANYON) which is about 500 feet East of our home,
Thank you City of Anaheim for periodically hiring goats to clear the brush in the canyon!
Since then there have been several wildfires in the area!
There is only one way out of the Mohler Loop, which is down Mohler Drive to Santa Ana Canyon Road.
We are TRAPPED in here.
To further aggravate the problem, when we get to Santa Ana Canyon Road we can only go East to
Weir Canyon Road OR West to Imperial Highway.
On weekdays, especially Fridays, Santa Ana Canyon Road is JAMMED with cars, especially east
bound. The City’s “Find Your Way” is a JOKE! It is WORTHLESS!
When we bought our lot in 1978 I noted that there was a dirt ramp extending North from the Fairmont
and Santa Ana Canyon intersection that was obviously intended to lead up to a bridge over the 91 Fwy.
WHY HAS THAT NOT BEEN BUILT IN THE LAST 48 YEARS? This would add a third escape route for
YOUR residents.
I was APPALLED when the City Council approved the 447 unit Festival Center apartment Project. The
last thing we need is more high density housing, with the associated additional cars trying to evacuate
in the next firestorm!
The city of Anaheim is currently at 159% of their build out expectations for the current time period for
the city, including district 6.
WHY TAKE A BEAUTIFUL SCENIC AREA AND RUIN IT WITH HIGH DENSITY HOUSING?
Mayor and Members of the Anaheim City Council, I am writing to express serious concerns regarding
any effort by the City of Anaheim to pursue California's Prohousing Designation and the policies that
1
typically accompany such a designation. While Anaheim has long supported housing development and
continues to approve significant residential projects throughout the city, many residents question why
The City would further commit itself to a framework that prioritizes housing production above other
critical community considerations such as traffic, parking, infrastructure , PUBLIC SAFETY, and quality
of life.Anaheim has already demonstrated substantial housing production. If the City is meeting or
exceeding its housing obligations, residents deserve a clear explanation of why additional Prohousing
commitments are necessary and what public benefits justify the potential loss of local planning flexibility.
The issue before us is not whether Anaheim should build housing. The issue is whether Anaheim
should continue increasing density without first proving that our roads, parking supply, infrastructure,
and EVACUATION SYSTEMS can safely support the cumulative growth that has already been
approved.
Respectfully,
Bill Erickson
