For public comment on September 29, 2026:
I have struggled to process the allegations involving Mayor Aitken because, quite frankly, they hurt my
heart.
To think that a young Latino woman, who was hired because of her experience, knowledge, and ability,
could have been made to feel less than because of her race is absolutely heartbreaking.
I want the truth.
I understand there are two sides to every story, and I believe everyone deserves a fair and independent
investigation.
I have heard people say this is a political hit because we are close to an election. Maybe that is
something an investigation should consider. But the timing does not answer the allegations.
The Los Angeles Times reported serious allegations of a pattern of discriminatory treatment and
harassment involving the Mayor’s Chief Policy Advisor. The Mayor said she will cooperate with the City’s
investigation.
So investigate it. Fairly. Independently. And thoroughly.
Because I cannot imagine going to work every day, afraid to speak up because I need my job. I cannot
imagine feeling that the very people who are supposed to protect employees are the very ones harming
them.
My heart hurts for anyone who has experienced harassment or discrimination.
And I am angry that allegations this serious could involve the highest elected office in our City.
If these allegations are substantiated, I want to know something else:
Who knew?
Who saw what was happening?
1
Who was told?
And most importantly, who was supposed to protect this employee?
Because then we have to ask an even bigger question:
How many others who are working for the City of Anaheim are experiencing something similar and
afraid to come forward?
Our elected leaders set an example for our employees, our residents, and especially our children.
We teach our children that our differences should be embraced, not mocked. That someone's race,
religion, ethnicity, or sexual orientation should never determine their worth or how they are treated.
Those values should not disappear at the doors of City Hall.
So I am not asking this Council to prejudge anyone.
I am asking you to find the truth.
And wherever that truth leads, have the courage to confront it.
